Moore’s Law applies to camera’s too: there’s always going to be better one on the horizon. For now, the king of the hill is the Nikon D3X. At 24megapixels, sporting a DX sensor, you can’ t top it for image quality. When compared to the only other camera at the same level, it is clearly a sharper camera, with faster processing and a crisper image then the Canon 5D Mark II.

It is however, not without it’s own problems. One of those problems is that it is a victim of it’s own sucess: lenses that previously were more then sufficient show flaws. Because the sensor is so much better, you’ll definitely be able to tell the cheap lenses from the expensive ones.

So the bottom line: should you buy one?

The short answer is no. Nikon has really overstepped all logic and priced their top of the line camera at $8000. This is rediculous. When you consider that the comparible Canon (that 5D Mark II) is only slightly less of a camera and is priced at a much more reasonable $3500 (that’s the kit, with a nice lens), I would suggest that you wait and buy the Canon.  At least until Nikon comes down a bit on their pricing.
