You have to get this laptop
My cleverly crafted title aside, this blog post will be dedicated to the laptop computer that you, well, have to get. And I mean HAVE TO. I’m going to let Business Week do the talking here:
The result, code-named Intel mobile Metro notebook, is less than 0.7 inches thick—about one-quarter of an inch thicker than Motorola’s iconic cell phone [the Razr], making it the world’s thinnest notebook. And at 2.25 pounds, it’s also one of the lightest small-sized portable computers. Other features include always-on Internet connectivity via various wireless technologies.
You read that right: a quarter of an inch thicker than a Razr. It’ll have always-on connectivity, using all Intel chips, of course, to connect via Wi-Fi, EV-DO and WiMax. It’ll also have a flash memory hard drive, with an expected battery life of 14 hours.
This thing is going to be available soon, perhaps as soon as the end of 2007, though no prices have yet been released or announced.
The last thing I’ll say about this is that I’m not buying the idea that this product appeals to women. I think this is a definite whizz-bang kinda gadget, which is within man’s purview.

The plane to end it all
I’m not going to come right out and say that extravagences such as these are a sign of the apocalypse. I will, however, imply that this is the case. Thank the Lord above for Boeing and its 787 Dreamliner VIP edition, because we’re all a step closer to meeting Him.
The Boeing 787, in non-VIP trim, is a mid-sized, wide body, twin engined jet airliner currently under development by Boeing’s Commercial Airplanes unit and scheduled to enter service in May 2008. It will carry between 210 and 330 passengers depending on variant and seating configuration. (Thank you Wikipedia for that description.)
Not limited by the making-ends-meet existence that many of us eek out, Joseph Lau, a Japanese important person, paid a hefty $153-million for his custom made airplane. All told, he’s got more than 2500 square feet of cabin space all to his lonesome. You just have to FOLLOW THE LINK for pictures. You ain’t seen nothing like it. Read it soon, before the world ends in one giant fireball.

Read this, don’t get huge
I know that some of you will think that diet isn’t exactly “sporting.” Why waste your time with counting calories and fat grams? Well, I’ll tell you: it’s hard jet around the globe, get into the lastest styles or generally enjoy life when you can’t see your, um, toes.
To do my part to keep you lean and mean, I’m passing along this great page from Men’s Health. It’s basically a catalogue of fast food joints and their nutrition facts. Some of this crap is going to flat out shock you, but it’s good information to have.
Your waist line will thank me.

The Grand Cigar, Grand Central Terminal
Just about everyone passes through Grand Central Terminal in New York City at least once. Many of you pass through nearly every day. When you’re there, by definition, you’re headed someplace, so it’s unlikely that you’re treating the Terminal as a shopping destination.
There is a new shop in the Terminal, The Grande Cigar, which may merit the “destination” moniker. The Grande Cigar is a purveyor of fine cigars and accessories.
The Grande Cigar will offer the most popular cigar brands available, including Montecristo, Avo, Partagas, Ashton, Cohiba and Macanudo. Accessories available will include handmade humidors, cigar cutters, elegant lighters and ashtrays and walking sticks.
Check it out if you’re on your way someplace, or even if you’re not.

A time to remember the fallen
Here’s wishing everyone a happy Memorial Day weekend. Especially considering that men and women are currently dying for our country, it’s a perfect time to remember those that have given their lives in service of the United States.

You say alcoholic, others say dedicated overachiever
This may be old to some, but it’s new to me. And the story is absolutely true. I can honestly say that I’ve never shown this kind of dedication to anything in my entire life.
Here’s the story.
Drinky McStumblesalot apparently had a coors light addiction. Recognized by his landlord as a “reliable tenant” who timely paid his bills, this young man’s life was entirely consumed by the consumption of Coors Light. Wow. Coors Light? Is there anything worse than this swill? But I digress. Mr. McStumbles had carved himself tunnels to his bedroom, the bathroom and the kitchen, but never took the time to go to a trashcan. Notice that there’s no other trash in the apartment?
Freaky. But give the dude his due. He went all the way with something. Maybe he can serve as an example to us all.

*EDIT* Ok, I studied the pics some more and there’s other trash in the apartment. But I think my point still stands: absolute dedication.

Titanic Watch
Against my better judgment, I am updating my prior post regarding Titanic DNA watches.
The press release cometh:
Ronaldo received the first Titanic-DNA watch, fresh out of the Geneva-based Romain Jerome factory. Mister Yvan Arpa , CEO of the company and big admirer of Ronaldo - all time best top scorer of World Cup finals (15 goals) - met him in Milan this week-end.
The Titanic-DNA watch mixes past and present as it is, amongst others, made with rusted steel
and coal from the famous ocean liner. For the first time in the watch industry, you can wear a piece of history on your wrist.
Following the success at Baselworld, the collection will be available worldwide starting October 2007.
Romain Jerome is proud to have Ronaldo wear its watch.
I still hate these watches. I think they’re absurd, morbid, stupid, overpriced, etc. etc. Maybe marketing IS King. Maybe every idea has at least some takers. But rusted steel and coal? I’m truly at a loss for words.
I’m most surprised by the part of the quote above “following the success at Baselword.” What? Let me tell you, I need to get rich, and quick, because whatever gazillionaires are smoking has got to be some amazing stuff.

Another travel update
The abundance of travel posts lately may be attributed to one thing: I’m going on my own vacation in about 10 days. I will be out of the office for 8 business days, which is the longest out-of-the-office period of my career. Is that pathetic, or what? And I know that I’m coming back to a nightmare of filing emergencies and client needs, so let’s just hope that the trip is good enough to be worth it.
Ok, with that meandering set up, I would like to introduce you to the It List, Travel and Leisure’s list of the best new hotels. Broken down by category, there’s bound to be something that interests you. From New York City to Pench National Park in India, every conceivable climate, adventure, interest and landscape is covered. Except New Zealand. This list should include someplace in New Zealand. Don’t ask me why, and no, I’m not going to find the One Ring. It’s just that New Zealand is my number one desired travel locale. But enough about what the list doesn’t have. Read more to find out what it does.

The Beer Advocate’s Top 100
The label you see pictured here represents the NUMBER ONE beer in the Beer Advocate’s Top 100. You get one point if you’ve ever heard of it, ten points if you’ve actually tasted it. But Trappist apparently makes some really, really tasty brew, because they’ve got 4 of the top 100 spots.
I’ll go further: I’ve never heard of the vast majority of the beers on this list. Let me add this, however: based on what I know of the Beer Advocate (read: they know their shit cold), I’m inclined to trust the list like gospel. Each beer is given a pretty particular score, and there are more detailed comments for each, as well. It’s unlikely that many of these brews are going to be available at your neighborhood Applebee’s, so know-how on how to get them is going to huge.
Does anyone have any first-hand impressions of the beers on this list?

Only the best vacation villa ever
There are larger vacation homes or more lavish hotels, but there’s something amazing about over water bungalows in Bora Bora. Getting to Bora Bora takes some patience from the States, figure on an entire day’s travel (or losing two days to travel total), so it’s not a place you go to kill a weekend.
The first over water bungalows were built about thirty years ago, but now they have become pretty standard in Bora Bora and, to some extent, Tahiti. Though a common feature of many resorts, like anything else you can spend a lot or a little. If you’ve never thought about getting away to Bora Bora, maybe now you have a reason.
