New Farraris to be Simultaneously Two-Wheel-Drive, Four-Wheel-Drive
Okay, don’t get too excited, you’re not necessarily going to be able to take your new Ferrari on the Dakar Rally. But for those that like to drive at ridiculously fast speeds on both wet and dry roads, this is the news you’ve been waiting for.
New Ferarris will come with what the Italian manufacturer has named “insertable four wheel drive” (debate rages in English language circles about the validity of the word insertable). Basically, when the car’s computer senses a lack of traction, the normally rear-wheel-drive machines will kick into all-wheel-drive mode. Drivers will also, for reasons unknown, be able to activate the feature manually.
As for how it works, the engineers at Ferrari are keen to explain it in the simplest language possible:
The insertable transmission system presents a second clutch, which on one end is connected with fixed transmission ratios to the crankshaft upstream of the gearbox and on the other is connected with fixed transmission ratios to the secondary driving wheels.
Yep, we understood all of that as well.
